Trump says the GOP ‘broke’ Schumer
President Trump criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y. ) handling of the government shutdown in an interview on Monday, saying Republicans bested him in the process.
“I think he made a mistake in going too far,” Trump told Fox News’s Laura Ingraham on The Ingraham Angle. “He thought he could break the Republicans and the Republicans broke him.”
“I’ve never seen a politician change so much,” the president said. “He was a pretty talented guy. He’s lost his talent.”
Schumer is facing backlash from Democrats across the board for Sunday’s procedural vote that would begin the process of reopening the government. The minority leader’s critics argue that he was unable to keep the Democratic caucus together, resulting in seven Democrats, plus Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), joining with Republicans in voting to reopen the government without any assurances of extending ObamaCare subsidies.
The minority leader notably voted against the measure, citing the subsidies that are set to expire at the end of this year.
Progressive Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) said in a post on the social platform X that Schumer is “no longer effective,” while Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.), another progressive, slammed Schumer for not endorsing Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani (D) in New York City’s mayoral race.
“Don’t endorse or say who you voted for in NYC, despite there being a Dem candidate. Get Dem Senators to negotiate a terrible ‘deal’ that does nothing real about healthcare. Screw over a national political party. Profile of scourge? Next,” Pocan posted on X.
Progressive groups MoveOn and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee have also called on Schumer to step down from his post as minority leader.
