A poll conducted ahead of the New York City mayoral election found that 9% of residents would “definitely” leave the city and another 25% would “consider” relocating if Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani proved victorious on Nov. 4.
It is yet to be seen whether NYC will ultimately hemorrhage millions of residents in the coming months. It appears, however, that Mamdani’s rise to power has already prompted departures at the New York Police Department.
‘How do you work for somebody who considers you racist and anti-queer and wants to defund the police?’
Citing sources familiar with the situation and Police Pension Fund data, the New York Post indicated that a surge of police officers quit in the weeks leading up to the mayoral election, when Mamdani was a clear favorite to win.
In October, the NYPD reportedly saw a 35% spike in police of all ranks leaving the force. Whereas 181 left the force in October 2024, this year 245 officers left during the same stretch.
Detectives Endowment Association president Scott Munro told the Post, “Morale is down because everyone is concerned about the policies Mamdani wants to put in place.”
“You have a person who is supposed to be running New York City that does not believe in law enforcement,” continued Munro. “What’s coming out of everyone’s mouth is, ‘We’re in trouble.'”

Mamdani, who takes office on Jan. 1, has made no secret in recent years of his antipathy toward the NYPD.
The mayor-elect suggested, for instance, in a June 28, 2020, tweet that the NYPD “is racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety” and stressed that it was necessary to “defund the police.”
“How do you work for somebody who considers you racist and anti-queer and wants to defund the police?” said one retired cop. “Things are hard enough already. If you’re eligible to leave, why would you want to stay in that situation?”
Mamdani now claims that he doesn’t want to defund the police; however, he has indicated that he’s not interested in hiring more police to address the NYPD’s near-record-low numbers and appears keen to replace police in certain circumstances with social workers.
On the campaign trail, Mamdani proposed the creation of an agency aimed at preventing “violence before it happens by taking a public health approach to safety.” The so-called Department of Community Safety would have a budget of over $1 billion — drawing $605 million from existing programs — and would appropriate some of the responsibilities of police, including responding to mental health calls and dealing with erratic homeless individuals.
Some individuals with actual experience dealing with the city’s mentally ill and homeless have suggested that Mamdani’s proposal is disaster waiting to happen.
A Bronx cop told the Post, “How’s that going to work when the person pulls out a gun or a knife?”
“You can’t do this without police — it’s impossible,” Richard Perkins, a behavioral nurse with 14 years’ experience told the Gothamist. “No one in their right mind would do this alone. You’re going to get hurt.”
Mamdani’s appointment of Elle Bisgaard-Church as his chief of staff signals he’s likely serious about the DCS. Bisgaard-Church, who serves as Mamdani’s campaign manager, was reportedly the proposed agency’s “chief architect.”
In addition to effectively replacing police with social workers on certain calls, Mamdani has ruffled feathers by committing to both closing Rikers Island prison and shifting the final say on police disciplinary actions from the NYPD commissioner to the anti-police Civilian Complaint Review Board.
‘It seems to me like there may be people from there looking for jobs.’
“Nobody wants to be a New York City cop,” a police union consultant told the Post. “It’s not worth the money, the stress, the danger, especially working for a mayor who wants to take the department apart.”
Blaze News has reached out for comment to the New York City Police Benevolent Association and the Sergeants Benevolent Association of the NYPD as well as to the mayor’s office.
Retired NYPD Chief of Department John Chell recently told Newsmax that about 4,000 police officers of every rank are eligible for retirement in January but suggested that “it remains to be seen” whether there will ultimately be a mass exodus.
In the meantime, law enforcement organizations in other jurisdictions are extending offers to disenchanted NYPD officers.
The Houston Police Officers’ Union, for instance, released a flyer earlier his month telling New York cops “disgusted with the election of Zohran Mamdani” that the Houston Police Department is hiring and offering “competitive pay with [a] 36.5% pay raise just approved over 5 years.”
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office was one of the outfits in Florida that is similarly trying to recruit from the NYPD, reported WMBB-TV.
“With the changing of what’s going on in New York City with a new mayor and probably a different way of doing things for law enforcement up there, it seems to me like there may be people from there looking for jobs,” said Sheriff A.J. Smith. “And I have jobs. And I would love to have anybody from the NYPD or anywhere up that way that may be affected by the change to apply here.”
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is also seizing on the opportunity to recruit New York cops alienated by the incoming mayor.
ICE shared a recruitment poster to social media last month captioned, “NYPD OFFICERS: Work for a President and a Secretary who support and defend law enforcement — not defund or demonize it.”

Pair of punks caught on video chucking chair at cops — hitting one in back of head — during Domino’s Pizza brawl: Police
Police in Glassboro, New Jersey, said two males were caught on video throwing a chair at officers — hitting one in the back of the head — during an early Saturday morning brawl inside a Domino’s Pizza store.
Police said after officers responded to the large fight around 2:44 a.m. and were making arrests, two black males — one wearing a gray jacket and the other a light blue sweatshirt — “picked up a chair and threw it at our officers, striking one of them in the back of the head. Not only was this intentional, they found it extremely hysterical while they ran from the scene.”

WTXF-TV reported that the officer who was hit was treated at the scene and is expected to recover.
While police said in their original Facebook post that “we need your help in identifying them,” a Monday afternoon update indicates that suspects have been identified.
However, surveillance video showing the brawl — including the moment the chair was thrown — is no longer on the police department’s Facebook post. Also no longer visible on the post are the four still images of the two suspects.
Police did indicate in their 1:30 p.m. Monday update that a “news release will be made available when feasible.”
A Domino’s employee interviewed at the scene told WTXF that “there was so much chaos up there … just a bunch of people, like, throwing punches at each other, even at my co-workers. … I saw … one girl turn around and just deck another girl in the face. Out of nowhere I looked to my left, [and] there’s a chair just flying right down this hallway.”
Glassboro is about 40 minutes south of Philadelphia. The station added that the Domino’s Pizza store is located near Rowan University, which also is in Glassboro.
As you might expect, a number of reactions to the incident weren’t exactly sympathetic to the brawlers and chair throwers. To wit:
- “These MFs need an old-school ass whooping,” one commenter wrote. “Maybe I am better off out the game now. S**t is ridiculous nowadays.”
- “Time to get rid of no bail and minimum prison sentences,” another user said, adding that it’s the “only way you’re gonna cut it out — or at least cut it down.”
- “They should all be arrested and charged!!” another commenter declared. “The ones standing around watching and recording are no better than the others.”
- “This is disgusting,” another user opined. “Absolute animals that need to be locked up.”

A 15-year-old New York City boy spoke out from his hospital bed this week after police said a group of 13 suspects — also teenagers — attacked and stabbed and robbed him on Oct. 22.
Police said the boy was on his way home from school in Jamaica, Queens, when the broad-daylight attack occurred at the intersection of 160th Street and Hillside Avenue, WCBS-TV reported.
‘What happened to my son is horrific.’
With his mother by his side, the victim recounted to the station the words of one of his attackers.
“Give me all your clothes, whatever you’re wearing, your shoes,” the boy recalled one of the mob members telling him, WCBS noted.
He then told the station, “I [started] running. After that, they pushed me and stabbed me.”
The vicious attack left the 15-year-old with severe stab wounds, broken bones, bruises — and needing surgery, the station said.
After all that, WCBS said the suspects stole the victim’s sneakers — worth $350.
“I was shocked to see my son in this condition,” the boy’s mother told the station in her native language of Punjabi. “What happened to my son is horrific.”
Local activist Japneet Singh told WCBS the attack took place on “a major avenue, major corridor” and that “if that can happen to this boy, it can happen to any of our children. We have to make sure we protect our kids.”
While the boy has months of recovery ahead of him — including three surgeries — his mother told the station she hopes those responsible are caught. Meanwhile, she added to WCBS that she’s not leaving his side: “Ever since he was attacked, I’ve been here with him day and night.”
Police told WNYW-TV that detectives are reviewing surveillance video from the area to identify those involved.

Chicago violence: Almost 20 shot — 3 fatally — over weekend, police say
Nearly 20 people were shot — three of them fatally — in Chicago over the weekend, police told WBBM-TV.
The station said the shooting victims’ ages range from 18 to 70.
A woman of an unknown age was found unresponsive in an alley behind the 11000 block of South Mackinaw Avenue at 10:18 a.m., WBBM said. She had been shot twice in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene, the station said.
Police reported only one shooting on Friday. It took place just before 6:30 p.m. in the 5500 block of South Lafayette Avenue where police said an unknown person shot a 43-year-old woman on the street multiple times, WBBM noted. The woman was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, the station said.
The shootings ramped up on Saturday, as police said a dozen people were hit by gunfire — two of them fatally, the station said.
In one of the fatal shootings, police told WBBM that individuals in a red Dodge Charger were traveling westbound in the 4400 block of West Augusta Boulevard just before 5:30 a.m. when they were struck by gunfire, after which the vehicle crashed. The driver, a 37-year-old man, was shot in the back while his 29-year-old male passenger was shot multiple times in the head, the station said. Both victims were taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital where the 29-year-old was in critical condition — but the 37-year-old, later identified as Mauro Josemartin, was pronounced dead, WBBM said.

In the other fatal shooting, a 23-year-old man was in a vehicle in the 4100 block of West Jackson Boulevard at 3:10 p.m. when he was hit in the chest by gunfire, the station said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital of Cook County where he was pronounced dead, WBBM noted.
On Sunday, six people were shot, one of them fatally, the station said. In the fatal shooting, a woman of an unknown age was found unresponsive in an alley behind the 11000 block of South Mackinaw Avenue at 10:18 a.m., WBBM said. Among the nonfatal shootings, four unknown gunmen approached a 43-year-old man in the 1500 block of East 75th Street just before 4 p.m. Saturday and opened fire at him, WBBM said. The man was hit in the ankle area and taken to a hospital in good condition, the station said.
On Sunday, two men — ages 18 and 19 — were in a business in the 100 block of East 51st Street just before 6 a.m. when a man came up and shot them both, WBBM said. The 18-year-old was shot in the upper right leg and transported himself to Provident Hospital of Cook County, the station said, adding that the 19-year-old was shot in the left calf and was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center; both were in fair condition. Police told WBBM that the shooter was wearing a gray jumpsuit and fled east on foot.
Also on Sunday, police told the station that multiple people exited a dark-colored SUV outside a business in the 800 block of East 79th Street around 10:45 a.m. and shot two men, ages 66 and 70. The 66-year-old was hit in the right wrist, chest, and groin, police told WBBM, adding that the 70-year-old was hit once in the buttocks. Both victims were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center where the 66-year-old was reported in critical condition, and the 70-year-old was in fair condition.

Horror-costumed trio banged on home’s front door late at night and ‘threatened to kill us,’ woman says. Then cops intervened.
A trio dressed in Halloween horror costumes were caught on doorbell video banging on the front door of a Northern Virginia home late at night and threatening those inside earlier this month.
“It’s either you coming out or we coming in!” one voice can be heard on the video, WUSA-TV reported, adding that another shouted, “Open the door!”

A woman named Shayla — who told the station she was staying with her mother in her Alexandria home — added that “they kept, like, knocking on the door. The knocks would get harder and harder.”
Shayla told WUSA she called 911 and warned the group that police were on the way, but she said that didn’t deter them, and they continued shouting and trying to force their way in.
Worse still, Shayla told the station the trio “threatened to kill us.”
Plus, she added to WUSA that when they couldn’t get in through the front door, they moved to the back of the house.
“This whole thing they broke down, as you can tell,” Shayla explained to the station in the aftermath as she showed damage to the backyard fence.
“They hopped up on here and went through there,” she added to WUSA as she showed a now-damaged screen-in back porch.
Shayla also told the station that the intruders still ramped things up: “They were just hitting the window. My heart dropped when they said that they were gonna take a chair and break down the door. That is just too much.”
She added to WUSA that “they tried to enter into the home.” Shayla explained to the station that other factors made the ordeal worse, especially for her mother: “My dad recently just died, so it’s just, like, I’m just glad I was there. But now [my mother’s] in fear. She don’t wanna stay there by herself.”
Fortunately, the ordeal ended after 10 minutes, as she remarked what could have happened — to the intruders.
“It could have been bad,” Shayla told WUSA. “Our Second Amendment right was not used and could have been, like being very transparent.”
She added a message to the perps, the station said: “The time frame alone, 10 o’clock at night to knock on someone’s door in costume is never OK. Halloween, not Halloween, it’s never OK.”
By Oct. 17, police said they were investigating the case as an attempted burglary.
“This is a very serious matter,” Alexandria Police Chief Tarrick McGuire said in a news conference, WUSA noted in a follow-up story. “They began to make threatening and alarming comments to the family … specifically, they said, ‘If you do not come out, we will come in,’ and also threatened to do bodily harm, stating that they would ultimately kill them.”
Well, police eventually got to the bottom of it — and considering what could have happened, the revelations were disturbing to say the least.
It turns out relatives of the victims in the home were responsible and had been recording video of what they called a prank, WRC-TV reported.
McGuire in a Monday update told WRC that the prank “could have been deadly,” especially considering that one of the victims called her brother for help prior to calling police — and he arrived with a gun.
What’s more, McGuire added to the station that several officers dedicated over 100 hours to the investigation.
Several tips from the community led to the suspects — and a female relative confessed, saying that she, her two teenage sons, and a teen nephew approached the home as two adults and a child stood in the background recording video, McGuire noted to WRC.
In the end, the victims didn’t press charges, and neither will police, the chief added to the station — with the following caveat: “This will hopefully be a learning experience for this family.”
McGuire added to WRC that the adults were guilty of a “moral failure” since they “were engaging in this behavior but also encouraging this behavior.”
