At least 2 killed, more wounded in shooting at Brown University
At least two are dead and others were wounded after a shooting Saturday at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, the New York Times reported.
An active shooter was reported just after 4:30 p.m. near the Barus and Holley engineering building on Hope Street, officials at the Ivy League college said, according to Fox News. Police were still searching for the shooter, who was described as a man dressed in black, the Times said.
‘It is imperative that all members of our community remain sheltered in place.’
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley told CNN that the doors of the engineering building where the shooting took place were unlocked since numerous final exams were being held there, according to the Times: “Based on what we heard from officials at Brown, anybody could have accessed the building at that time.”
Providence Fire Chief Derek Silva told the Times that two of the shooting victims were found dead at the scene.
Eight other shooting victims were being treated at Rhode Island Hospital, a spokeswoman told the Times, adding that six were in critical but stable condition, one was in critical condition, and another was in stable condition.
However, Smiley later announced that a ninth injured victim was identified, the Times said in a subsequent update, and that victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries from “fragments” related to the gunfire.
Smiley declined to provide any information about the victims, including whether they were Brown students, the Times said.
Brown University officials said just before 8:30 p.m. that the “campus continues to be in lockdown, and it is imperative that all members of our community remain sheltered in place,” the Times added.
Providence Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara said police believe they are looking for a single gunman, the Times also said, adding that no weapon had been recovered and officials did not know what type of gun was used.
Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee (D) said he spoke to FBI Director Kash Patel and that local, state, and federal officers were all searching for the gunman, the Times reported: “Everyone is working under the same goal right now — to keep everybody in that area safe and also to pursue” the attacker, McKee added to the paper.

Man fatally shoots 2 in Texas — tells cops pair followed him, tried to block his car, physically attacked him
Two males were fatally shot Friday night in Texas — and the man who pulled the trigger said the pair followed him, tried to block his car, and physically attacked him.
Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office told KTRK-TV the shooter said he acted in self-defense.
‘Looks like the 2 attackers had road rage. Is he not supposed to defend himself? Whatever it takes.’
Deputies responded around 8:45 p.m. to reports of a possible roadway shooting on Greengate Drive near Spring Stuebner Road in the Spring area, KHOU-TV said.
First responders told KTRK they found two males with gunshot wounds in the 22100 block of Greengate Drive; one died at the scene, and the other was taken to a hospital where he died.
The shooter said the pair followed his car for a while and tried to block him when he reached the neighborhood where the final confrontation took place, the sheriff’s office told KTRK.
Deputies added to KTRK that all three exited their vehicles, and the man who pulled the trigger said the pair started kicking him and his car.
“The shooter in the incident stayed on scene and surrendered himself to arriving deputies,” Sgt. Jason Brown noted to KHOU. The man who pulled the trigger is cooperating with investigators, the sheriff’s office told KTRK.
The fatally shot males have been identified as 57-year-old Timothy Underwood and 59-year-old Keith McDonald, KTRK said, citing the sheriff’s office.
No charges have been filed, officials told KTRK, and the shooter was not in custody.
However, the case was under investigation, and the district attorney’s office will review it, the sheriff’s office told KTRK.
When asked if the two males were armed, Brown told KHOU, “Not that we know of. We’re still in the process of going through the scene … but as of right now, we don’t believe that they were armed.”
Reactions under KHOU’s Facebook post about the fatal shootings were mixed:
- “They don’t have to be armed to do bodily harm or even kill you,” one commenter said.
- “They do if you’re in a car … because why don’t you just jump the curb to get away,” another commenter countered. “How are unarmed men going to hurt you if the doors are locked?”
- “FAFO,” another user bluntly noted before later adding, “Looks like the 2 attackers had road rage. Is he not supposed to defend himself? Whatever it takes.”
- “IDK … call me crazy, but if I felt my life was in danger, I would not park my car and get out of it … would you?” another commenter wondered. “Self-defense doesn’t work here. He was trigger happy and probably had road rage.”

‘A killing in cold blood’: Male, 74, slapped with $1 million bond after allegedly shooting dead a fellow owner of hunting land
Sheriff’s deputies in Wisconsin were called to a home on County Road M in Germania around 9:15 p.m. Nov. 12 for a report of a shooting, WSAW-TV reported. Germania is just under 70 miles northwest of Green Bay.
The caller told dispatchers that a male — later identified as 74-year-old Brent Hofman — shot his friend in the home’s garage, the station said.
‘We are devastated and heartbroken over the untimely loss of a wonderful man who meant so much to all of us.’
The caller had locked himself in a building on the property and told dispatchers he would defend himself if necessary, WSAW reported.
Hofman tried to enter the building where the caller had secured himself, the station said, adding that the caller fired his 22-caliber rifle in Hofman’s direction through a glass door.
When deputies arrived on scene, they found Hofman outside the home, WSAW reported, adding that Hofman sustained severe cuts to his face and head from the shattered glass.
Hofman at first failed to comply with verbal commands but was eventually arrested, the station said, adding that deputies noticed he was very intoxicated and slurring his speech.
During a search of the property, deputies found a victim dead inside a garage, WSAW reported.
Hofman was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, booked into the Shawano County Jail, and made his first appearance in Shawano County Court on Nov. 18 via video, the station said.
Hofman was formally charged with first-degree intentional homicide, attempted first-degree homicide, and being armed while intoxicated, WSAW reported, adding that both homicide charges carry an increased penalty for crimes against an elderly person.
The deceased victim has been identified as 67-year-old Rick Roundy from the Greenleaf area, the station said, adding that all three individuals involved in the incident are connected through ownership of hunting land in the Germania area.
Shawano County District Attorney Gregory Parker read the criminal complaint during the Nov. 18 hearing, WSAW reported.
Parker stated that Victim 2 told investigators he has known Hofman for many years through hunting and have joint properties, the station said. The DA added that Victim 2 indicated nothing was said that in any way would have aggravated or upset Hofman to cause him to do what he did, WSAW reported.
“I can’t put this thing any other way, but this is a killing in cold blood,” Parker said, according to the station.
Hofman’s bond was set at $1 million, WSAW noted.
The station said Roundy’s family released a statement:
We are devastated and heartbroken over the untimely loss of a wonderful man who meant so much to all of us.
As we grieve, we are thankful for the prayers and outpouring of support from family, friends, and community members.
Please understand our need for privacy during this difficult time. We will not be making any additional statements.
A status conference is scheduled for Jan. 5, WSAW reported, and Hofman remained in the Shawano County Jail.

After HS hallway bump, Florida 15-year-old to be tried as an adult for allegedly shooting 16-year-old dead
A 15-year-old Florida male is being charged as an adult after officials said he fatally shot a 16-year-old male last month.
Jacori Antonio Redding was charged with manslaughter with a weapon, for which he received no bond, Friday’s arrest affidavit said. He also was charged with possession of a firearm on school property, for which he received a $10,000 bond, as well as possession of a firearm by a minor, for which he received a $1,000 bond, the affidavit also said.
‘I’m angry that something as small as bumping into someone in the halls of a high school can result in a shooting death.’
A judge issued an order for Redding to be transferred from the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice to the custody of the Orange County Jail, according to the affidavit. Redding was booked into jail Friday, according to jail records.
The affidavit also said Redding is to be charged as an adult on the listed charges by the Orange County State Attorney’s Office.
It all erupted Oct. 9, police said — after a bump in a high school hallway.
Witnesses said that earlier in the day, Redding bumped into 16-year-old Pinien Dalmacy at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
Dalmacy told Redding to apologize, officials said, and Redding would not. So the two sophomores agreed to fight after school at Vogt-Meloon Park on West Oak Ridge Road, officials said.
The sheriff’s office said deputies responded to a shooting on the basketball court at the park and found Dalmacy, who was shot twice.
Monique H. Worrell, state attorney of the Ninth Judicial Circuit, said Redding killed Dalmacy using a gun, court documents said.
The sheriff’s office said Redding ran back to the high school after the shooting, and a deputy who coordinated with school officials secured Redding in the school cafeteria. Officials said the gun was found in his bag, Redding was arrested, and a juvenile custody order was obtained for manslaughter with a firearm and possession of a firearm on school property.

WFTV-TV’s video report added that it wasn’t Redding’s first time in a courtroom and that he already was facing a trial for grand theft auto.
“My heart aches for Pinien’s family, who are grieving this unimaginable loss,” Sheriff John Mina said. “And I’m angry that something as small as bumping into someone in the halls of a high school can result in a shooting death.”
The sheriff’s office said, “Detectives know there were witnesses to this shooting and that there may be video out there that could be helpful to the investigation. We are asking anyone with that kind of information to contact ocsoinfo@ocsofl.com.”
Redding on Tuesday pleaded not guilty, court records indicate. Redding’s in-jail arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 10; his hearing is scheduled for Nov. 12, court records say.

Mass shootings at, near 2 historically black colleges on their homecoming weekends raise concerns about possible deadly trend
Mass shootings at and near a pair of historically black colleges and universities over their homecoming weekends Friday and Saturday left one dead and at least 11 wounded, authorities said.
The violence was an eerie repeat of tragedies that took place last fall at two HBCUs — also during their homecoming festivities — and some observers are concerned about a possible trend.
‘This is becoming an every-year occurrence at a lot of schools.’
1 dead, 6 wounded at Lincoln University
At Lincoln University in Chester County, Pennsylvania — about an hour and 15 minutes west of Philadelphia — one person was killed and at least six people were wounded after a shooting Saturday evening, WHP-TV reported.
Officials identified one suspect as 21-year-old Zecqueous Morgan-Thompson, the station said, adding that court documents indicated he was charged with carrying a firearm without a license and was being held in Chester County Prison on $25,000 bail.
Officials said they believe the suspects did not attend homecoming with the intent to commit a mass shooting, WHP reported.

A 25-year-old male from Wilmington, Delaware, was identified as the deceased victim, the station said, adding that he reportedly was shot in the head. The six wounded victims are expected to survive and are in the same age range — between 20 and 25 years old, WHP said.
Lincoln University’s president in a Sunday statement said classes are canceled Monday in order to have a day of “healing and reflection,” the station said.

Authorities have not released the names of any victims. The DA said they were in the process of speaking with victims to learn more about what happened during the shooting.
Lincoln University’s police chief said the shots were fired in the parking lot of the International Cultural Center on campus. He said at the time there was a tailgate ceremony taking place following the college’s homecoming football game. He said tents and other tables were set up throughout the lot.
5 wounded near Howard University
Five people were shot near Howard University — a historically black college and university in Washington, D.C. — on Friday night during its homecoming weekend, WRC-TV reported.
D.C. police said the victims — four adults and a teenager — were taken to hospitals and were expected to survive after the shooting at Georgia Avenue and Howard Place, the station said.
Witnesses told WRC that dozens of people ran down Georgia Avenue from the shooting scene to a McDonald’s after shots were fired.
According to a statement from Howard University, a fight or confrontation between two suspects occurred before shots were fired, WRC reported, adding that police said none of the shooting victims are Howard students.
The university added in a Saturday statement that nobody from Howard was involved in the shooting, the station reported.
WRC said the university’s Homecoming Kick-Off Alumni & Friends Welcome Reception and the Greek Step Show were being held Friday night.
‘Something’s going on’
The Root, in its report about the pair of shootings, quoted a TikTok user as remarking, “First Howard, now Lincoln, something’s going on.”
The outlet added, “Among the jokes and quippy TikToks is something darker … Black Americans are feeling unsafe.”
The Root said another TikTok user recalled shootings last year at HBCUs and wondered if this represents a trend. Another user said, “This is becoming an every-year occurrence at a lot of schools, smh,” according to the outlet.
Last fall, two shootings occurred at two HBCUs — also during their homecoming weekends.
A dozen people were shot — one of them fatally — at Tuskegee University in Alabama last November. The deceased individual, an 18-year-old, reportedly died at the scene. One man reportedly was charged with possession of a machine gun in connection with the shooting. A month prior, five people were shot — one fatally — in a crowded area near a campus concert at Albany State University in Georgia.
Following the 2024 HBCU shootings, an Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporter penned an op-ed stating that there is a “growing and disturbing trend of gun violence that is threatening to change the nature of Black colleges’ most sacred institution — homecoming.”
The AJC reporter, Ernie Suggs, added:
In 2022, four people, including three students, were wounded near Clark Atlanta University after a drive-by shooting during a homecoming celebration.
In 2023, five people, including four students, were shot at Morgan State University. It was the third consecutive year that homecoming festivities at the Baltimore school were marred by gunfire.
