Brown University Taps DEI Official To Restore ‘Sense of Physical Security’ on Campus
Brown University is launching a “campus-wide healing and recovery” initiative aimed at “ensuring a sense of physical security” following December’s deadly shooting. Rather than tapping a psychologist or trauma specialist to lead the effort, the Ivy League school appointed Matthew Guterl, the vice president of Brown’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion and professor of “Africana Studies.”

Brown University’s head of public safety, Rodney Chatman, was placed on administrative leave Monday after a janitor revealed that he saw a suspicious person lurking around campus in the weeks leading up to the December 13 shooting—a person who ended up being the gunman, Claudio Manuel Neves Valente.

Brown University president Christina Paxson issued a lengthy statement Friday morning condemning gun violence and admonishing “harmful doxxing activity” and “disinformation in online media.” But while she made space in her 1,100-word message to point fingers, she failed to acknowledge any criticism her administration faced over its handling of Saturday’s shooting.
