More Unbelievable By The Minute
A few days ago I found myself hopelessly trying to explain to someone here in Tennessee how bureaucratic, how draconian, how 1984-ish California became during the pandemic. I say “hopelessly” because my interlocuter just could not believe what I was telling them. They just did not believe an American government could operate that way – especially when it came to the shuttering of churches and the enforcement of that dictate. As the story of the now year-old and massively destructive Palisades fire in Los Angeles unfolds, I fear the same thing is happening in the rest of the nation – they just can’t believe it.

It Is Not Just In With In With The New
Based on the news, especially the emergent news, not a Happy New Year in the Swiss Alps. Pray for all involved. The headlines generally were of the Eeyore variety, but that is entirely predictable since, much to the MSM chagrin – Donald Trump is still POTUS. But it set me thinking. What would it take to make it different? How could this new year begin with new thinking?

The Questions Resident In The Massive Minnesota Fraud
As the fraud onion in Minnesota continues to unpeel, layer by layer, many questions are raised. Why Minnesota? Is this happening on other states? (YES! – at least California, Perhaps Ohio? And then there are the more individual levels of deadly fraud.) Why won’t the media cover it? And a question I don’t think most people are considering – Did these programs benefit anyone in actual need?

Mullahs In A Vice
Merchants have taken to the streets of Tehran in protest over the economic situation in Iran. Meanwhile, Trump and Netanyahu are applying pressure from without. The Iranian President “urges’ the government to respond to the protest, proving how pointless the position actually is. The Mullahs that actually run that country are in a vice and being squeezed from all sides. Some see echoes of Tiananmen Square, but it should never be forgotten that in the end those protests failed. China has grown far more authoritarian since. The Mullahs have been a source of great evil in this world for a very long time now. We hope this most difficult situation would spell the end of their heinous regime, but will it?

Smoke, Fire, and Of Course
As the massive fraud in government benefits in Minnesota unravels, actual elected (Democratic) officials are becoming implicated. I’m shocked, shocked. More shocking; however, is that billion dollar amounts of fraud in California have gone virtually unreported and somehow government officialdom has avoided implication. Come on people – the time has come to face up to reality. Covid was an event of mass hysteria and people took advantage. Funny things happen when you set reason aside for panic. We’re going to get all tied up in knots as these schemes are exposed; we’re all going to create evidence boards trying to connect players and roles on each individual scandal and in the end miss the big picture. There are two major lessons to be drawn from the events of spring 2020 forward.

With Faith and Strength
My wife and I found ourselves in a discussion over the incredible variety of expressions of Christian faith. To my mind, I have been a Christian for decades, practically my entire lifetime. But I have friends who, for one quirky reason or another, still try to evangelize me because of some “error” they see in my theology or opinion. And while years ago I figured out that I have no way of knowing who really is in God’s hands and who isn’t, I know many people claiming Christian faith about which I carry deep doubt. I am glad God has to make these decisions, not me. What I can say, positively, is that there have been some people I have observed, whose faith and expression thereof inspired me. One just got added to the list.

Don’t Blame Me Kid!
Monday past we looked at an anecdotal piece from the NYTimes about how young people unrealistically think life is unaffordable. But it took a piece in The Free Press for me to understand just how wide and deep the ingratitude and expectation gap is between the youth and our seniors, the title – “Total Boomer Luxury Communism Is Bankrupting America.” Nothing like starting a piece with an insult.

Fascinating Christmas
Defending Christianity around Christmas has, unfortunately, become commonplace. But defending it with military force is new. Yesterday President Trump ordered airstrikes on ISIS targets in northern Nigeria where those same ISIS forces have been wiping out entire Christian villages. Because everyone is still in a food coma the commentary has yet to begin to flow, but watch for it soon.

The Day God Finds Us
For two decades now I have written on a blog somewhere. I always write on Christmas day, and almost no one reads. Consumed with family and friends, presents and meals, and faith – Christmas is just not a day that most people read, and especially not the internet. They’ll read “The Night Before Christmas” or Dickens, or the Bible, but blogs, rightfully, just are not Christmas fodder. But sometimes they read on Boxing Day (the day after Christmas for those not attuned to British tradition.) It is always hard to know what to write on Christmas.

The Most Relevant Story Ever
Finally in this Christmas week of dark stories comes a ray of light. Josh Code at The Free Press on “What Drives Gen Z to Church?” The stories of a revival of faith among younger people are quite wonderful. They give hope in a time when humanity seems hopeless. This little video piece reflects the few young people that are showing up at my church and it is fascinating. There are a couple of things worthy of note.
