Politics…Imagined
It has disappeared almost as fast as it sprang into the discussion, but the video from veteran Democratic persons in Congress, telling members of the military they did not need to follow unlawful orders bears further discussion. (I had to search far and wide, but found it in unaltered, unedited and uncommented form on the Facebook page of one of the Congresspersons involved.) Everybody has rightfully asked, “What orders?” But I don’t think the non-existence of such orders is really the heart of the issue here.

The Death of Higher Education
New reports out note that college students can’t do Math (arithmetic actually) and now Harvard admits “A’s” are normative, not exceptional (breaking the heart of this once proud straight-A student.) We have a problem. Our best and brightest aren’t and our university system will soon collapse as the financial cost of engaging in it seems less and less worthwhile. Earlier this week Mary Katherine Ham told the host she did not know if college would be worth it for her children. It is a big problem.

Does Bureaucracy Breed Confusion? (Hint: YES!)
Long long ago, as the fires burned, I said that government ineptitude was at the root of all of it regarding the Los Angeles fires of last January. But that it would never be exposed because the bureaucratic stew was too thick to pick through. That it would end up with a bunch of agencies pointing fingers at each other with the responsibility ending up so diverse there would be no one person or agency to hold accountable. As investigations and reporting continue, that is in fact exactly what is happening.

The Capital IS NOT The Country
I am just returned from a short trip to Northern Virginia. My travels did not require me to enter Washington, D.C. proper, but I did fly in and out of Reagan National Airport. For the uninitiated, that airport is just across the rive from D.C. and from its windows you can see the Washington Monument, in some parts the Jefferson Memorial, and if you squint hard, The Capital Dome. It is this last sight that I want to address in this post.

Justice and Fairness
Fairness: “fair or impartial treatment : lack of favoritism toward one side or another.” Justice: “conformity to truth, fact, or reason.” Do you see the difference? Fairness makes sure each child gets a sucker. Justice says the well-behaved kid has earned what he or she gets. The concepts are intertwined and in recent decades have become nearly synonymous, but their roots and original meanings are no where near synonymous. All things being equal fairness and justice are synonymous, but since when have all things been equal?

I wish I knew how Christians could think this was a good idea (HT: Instapundit), “The Text With Jesus app allows users to “embark on a spiritual journey and engage in enlightening conversations with Jesus Christ,” according to the app’s website,” but alas I cannot. That is the most blasphemous version of the AI silliness, there is more.

Bureaucratic Logic and Normal Logic
So, this week, a couple more articles on microplastics. Now, here’s the thing – the articles talk about the harm that these materials might cause, but they also claim little is known about them. Yet, something must be done! Now, in the short term that breaks down into, “I am scaring you so you will give me more money to keep studying this problem.” But that is when the issues really get serious. One, after pouring millions into researching a potential problem, agencies would look foolish if there was no problem, so there is gonna be a problem, whether there is actually a problem or not. Two, the problem will then get completely lost in a haze and maze of regulation that empowers the agency, but does little to actually deal with the problem. Or worse, it may do nothing about the actual problem other than burden the world so that the agency can “track” the problem. That’s bureaucratic logic.

Why Mamdani?
The recent election in NYC is both fully understandable and entirely baffling. Understandable because who doesn’t want free stuff? Baffling because there truly is no such thing as a free lunch – some one always pays. The host wrote this week about how younger generations, generations without memory of the Soviet Union, do not fully understand the ramifications of the “free lunches” promised by Mamdani. He has a good point, but I also think there are deeper concerns at play.

Nickname Earned! – Gov. Gavin Newscum
I have generally eshued the nickname for California’s ineffective, self-righteous and odious governor that appears in the headline here. It just strikes me as below the belt. He is a lot of things, most notably inept and hypocritical (The French Laundry incident during covid is simply heinous,) but “scum” must be reserved for those that have truly earned it – those that purposefully and with malice aforethought act in an awful and unacceptable manner. Well, yesterday news broke in which Gavin Newsom crossed that line.

Angry America
Currently, I don’t enjoy following politics. I have to – nature of writing for this space, but it is not much fun. Our issues are animated by our hatreds and opposition, not by visions of good, better, best. I remain conservative, but I no longer feel like I am building a better America, instead I feel like I am on a rescue mission, just trying to keep the nation’s collective head above water. Each move ends up crashing on the rocks of some juvenile leftist stunt and each time it happens some conservatives either walk away frustrated or just start yelling and stunting themselves, thinking such is a counter-measure.
