Bureaucratic Logic and Normal Logic
So, this week, a couple more articles on microplastics. Now, here’s the thing – the articles talk about the harm that these materials might cause, but they also claim little is known about them. Yet, something must be done! Now, in the short term that breaks down into, “I am scaring you so you will give me more money to keep studying this problem.” But that is when the issues really get serious. One, after pouring millions into researching a potential problem, agencies would look foolish if there was no problem, so there is gonna be a problem, whether there is actually a problem or not. Two, the problem will then get completely lost in a haze and maze of regulation that empowers the agency, but does little to actually deal with the problem. Or worse, it may do nothing about the actual problem other than burden the world so that the agency can “track” the problem. That’s bureaucratic logic.

Why Mamdani?
The recent election in NYC is both fully understandable and entirely baffling. Understandable because who doesn’t want free stuff? Baffling because there truly is no such thing as a free lunch – some one always pays. The host wrote this week about how younger generations, generations without memory of the Soviet Union, do not fully understand the ramifications of the “free lunches” promised by Mamdani. He has a good point, but I also think there are deeper concerns at play.

Nickname Earned! – Gov. Gavin Newscum
I have generally eshued the nickname for California’s ineffective, self-righteous and odious governor that appears in the headline here. It just strikes me as below the belt. He is a lot of things, most notably inept and hypocritical (The French Laundry incident during covid is simply heinous,) but “scum” must be reserved for those that have truly earned it – those that purposefully and with malice aforethought act in an awful and unacceptable manner. Well, yesterday news broke in which Gavin Newsom crossed that line.

Angry America
Currently, I don’t enjoy following politics. I have to – nature of writing for this space, but it is not much fun. Our issues are animated by our hatreds and opposition, not by visions of good, better, best. I remain conservative, but I no longer feel like I am building a better America, instead I feel like I am on a rescue mission, just trying to keep the nation’s collective head above water. Each move ends up crashing on the rocks of some juvenile leftist stunt and each time it happens some conservatives either walk away frustrated or just start yelling and stunting themselves, thinking such is a counter-measure.

Understanding Modernity
Tom Knighton, writing at Townhall, notes the lack of stigma that exists in today’s culture and how the absence of such stigma has hurt society generally. The piece is a bit rantish for my taste (All rants are bad except when I write them 😉 ) but the point is well taken. Behaviors that once sat in a corner by themselves are now mainstream and certainly cannot be “judged.”

The End Of The Shutdown Is In Sight
The first procedural hurdle was cleared last night. Coverage – local – on the Hill – the Beeb. Seems like the typical pattern is holding, those moderate and endangered Dems finally reaching a deal with Thune, et. al. – enough to get over the line anyway. And you know it is a good deal because the hard Left is NOT happy.

Our Political Divisions
The election just past in no way represented coalescing of American political thought. The candidates and issues were more extreme and more divisive than ever. On Friday I pointed at a Prop 50 ad from California that simply spewed political hatred and division without any context or idea about the issue at hand. Long term, this is not a recipe for a healthy democracy like ours.

Media Extremes
The Free Press has declared full war against the streak of antisemitism in the extreme right. I first covered it based on a couple of articles they published a couple of weeks ago, noting the difference between friends and allies. They published another one this week that makes a rather important point. It is easy to confuse media and politics, but they are not the same.

America The Visceral
I was in California for Tuesday’s election. California is not reporting turnout numbers just yet but based on what I saw, they were low. There were certainly fewer than normal venues as I drove past several that were very active when I was a resident just 30 short months ago and nothing was there. Reports of a “realignment” are quite premature. But I will tell you it was ugly.

I awake this morning to the news that Dick Cheney has passed away. Once one of the most powerful figures in the Republican Party and the nation, he was one of the last great servants of the people. Never great with the media, he became the perpetual bridesmaid, serving in high government office with great performance and distinction, culminating in the Vice- Presidency during the Bush 43 administration. By virtue of his great competence, he was constantly fodder for humorists and satirists, some who took their job far too seriously. This made him an easy target for Donald Trump, with whom he had many disagreements. And so at a time when age and infirmity would have relegated him to the political sidelines, he found himself out of the game altogether – which is shameful.
