Socialist Mamdani’s tax assault on NYC’s rich begins — claims Adams forced his hand with fiscal crisis

New York City’s newly inaugurated mayor, Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani, revealed plans to increase taxes on “the richest New Yorkers” less than one month into his term, blaming former Mayor Eric Adams (D) for a budget shortfall.
On Thursday, Mamdani held a press conference to detail the “Adams Budget Crisis,” claiming that the former mayor “misled and misinformed” New Yorkers about the “true state” of the city’s finances.
‘And here’s the part socialists hate saying out loud: “Free” is a lie.’
“I will be blunt: New York City is facing a serious fiscal crisis. There is a massive fiscal deficit in our city’s budget to the tune of at least $12 billion. We did not arrive at this place by accident. This crisis has a name and a chief architect,” Mamdani said.
“This is the Adams Budget Crisis.”
He accused Adams of handing the new administration “a poisoned chalice” by “systematically” under-budgeting necessary services, including rental assistance, shelter, and special education.
“Knowing his time in office was likely coming to an end, Mayor Adams chose political self-preservation over fiscal responsibility. This is not just bad governance. It is negligence,” Mamdani remarked.
“The Adams administration dramatically and intentionally understated the problem.”
Mamdani vowed to balance the budget over two fiscal years by implementing “bold solutions,” including “recalibrating the broken fiscal relationship between the state and the city.” He argued that New York City contributes 54.5% of the state’s revenue but receives only 40.5% of its operating expenditures.

“Working people did not cause this crisis, and they cannot be made the victims of its solution,” Mamdani stated.
“The time has come to tax the richest New Yorkers and most profitable corporations,” he declared.
Mamdani stated that he could “build a stronger city for everyone” if New York’s top 1% earners paid an additional 2% in income taxes, while claiming that the increase was not significant enough to drive wealthy individuals to leave the state.

Adams fired back at Mamdani in several posts on X, denying that he left a deficit in the city’s budget.
“Facts have a way of getting in the way when slogans replace math and blame replaces leadership,” Adams wrote. “I didn’t leave a ‘budget hole.’ I left over $8 BILLION in reserves. Only someone who can’t read a balance sheet would call that a crisis.”
“And here’s the part socialists hate saying out loud: ‘Free’ is a lie. Every so-called free program comes with a price tag, and someone always pays for it,” he added.
Adams argued that Mamdani’s real motive behind his press conference was to find a way to pay for the “laundry list of ‘free’ giveaways” he promised New Yorkers “to buy votes.”
“Now that the math doesn’t work, instead of owning the fact that he misled New Yorkers, he’s blaming me,” Adams said. “This is the same Mamdani who spent years attacking me for not spending enough during the migrant crisis. The only reason those reserves exist is because I ignored him and his socialist comrades who demanded we blow billions more with no guardrails.”
Adams mocked Mamdani in a third post on X, writing, “When you promise ‘free’ everything on Sunday, boldly declare that millionaires and billionaires shouldn’t exist on Monday, and by Tuesday you’re scrambling to fund your giveaways with the very people you wanted gone just yesterday.”

‘Proud to be a sanctuary city’: Mamdani announces another handout for illegal aliens in NYC

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) says that taxpayers will be on the hook for another handout available to illegal aliens.
The socialist mayor and Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul had previously announced their plan to provide free child care for 2-year-olds in the city as well as other programs for children across the state.
‘These are programs for every single New Yorker. These are not programs that are going to ask the immigration status of any one of the children.’
During a roundtable discussion Friday, Mamdani said that the program would be open to illegal immigrants.
“Just to put it very clearly, these are programs for every single New Yorker. These are not programs that are going to ask the immigration status of any one of the children,” he said.
“All of those children are New Yorkers,” he added. “They should all be enrolled in 3-K and pre-K, no matter where they were born or where they come from.”
He went on to clarify the sanctuary city policies of New York City.
“And we are also proud to be a sanctuary city,” Mamdani continued. “What a sanctuary city means is that we have policies in place, policies have existed for years in the city, that deny ICE agents access into schools, hospitals, city properties, or even the properties of city contractors unless those ICE agents can present a judicial warrant signed by a judge.”
Hochul has previously had to cut education funds in order to make up for spending on the immigration crisis. She has also set aside funds to help fight the Trump administration in court.
“As New York’s first mom Governor, fighting for New York’s families has always been at the core of my agenda,” said Hochul earlier in the month. “Since taking office, I’ve put families front and center, fighting to make our state more affordable and laying the groundwork to deliver universal childcare.”

President Donald Trump has made the dismantling of sanctuary city policies a central goal of his second term. His efforts to defund local governments with the policies have been stymied by legal opposition.
Critics of socialism are watching New York City closely to watch the effects of Mamdani’s policies on the prominent U.S. city. He has vowed to significantly hike up taxes in order to fund massive increases in social spending.

‘Such an a**hole’: Mamdani rejects kids’ snow day despite brutal snowy forecast — and the backlash is fierce

Newly inaugurated New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing some criticism for saying he would not declare a snow day for children during a bitter winter snowstorm.
Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for the entire state of New York on Friday, but the mayor said that students would be required to have online learning rather than a free day.
‘F**k him my kid will not be remote learning he will be building a snow man and some sleigh riding.’
“I know to the disappointment of any student that’s watching this right now, Monday is either going to be a remote learning day or it’s going to be an in-person school day,” Mamdani said Friday.
“It’s not going to be a traditional snow day. That is a determination we’ve made,” he added.
Forecasts say the city could be hit with as much as 18 inches of snow through the weekend, along with very cold temperatures.
Critics online responded with disapproval of the decision.
“I like this mayor but I do not like this! Give the kids a snow day!” said Cristóbal Alex of MSNBC.
“Snow days are an American pastime/tradition of happiness. So out of principle, he despises it and has to do the opposite,” read another response.
“Mamdani had an equity-focused agenda, but this is not equitable. Don’t forget too, the research has shown that students didn’t learn as much during virtual learning. This is just a wasted day that counts,” said another user.
“F**k him my kid will not be remote learning he will be building a snow man and some sleigh riding,” replied another critic.
“Mamdani is such an a**hole. No snow days?” read another.
“The forecasts don’t always get it right, but what is being predicted right now, whether it’s a foot of snow or even a little bit more, would be one of the biggest snowfalls that our city has seen in years,” continued Mamdani.
“Either late tomorrow evening or early Sunday morning, we are going to see snow start to begin to fall across our city,” he added. “It will fall and fall and then fall some more.”

Mamdani housing official decries ‘white middle-class homeowners’ for stalling ‘renter justice’ in resurfaced video

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration got hit with another blow in the form of a resurfaced video of more extremist comments from its top housing official.
Cea Weaver has been previously criticized for her socialist schemes on housing, but the newest video shows her taking aim at “white, middle-class homeowners.”
‘Unless we can undermine the institution of homeownership … it’s a really difficult organizing situation we find ourselves in.’
“I think that United States public policy has done a really, really, really good job of pitting cash-poor homeowners and working-class homeowners and middle-class homeowners against renters, and we need to figure out how to navigate that as organizers,” said Weaver in a video shared by the Free Beacon.
She went on to say that the real threat to “renter justice” was not institutional investors like BlackRock, but rather smaller-scale investors who own numerous housing units.
“It’s just this challenging dynamic,” she continued in the 2021 interview with Briahna Joy Gray. “White, middle-class homeowners are a huge problem for a renter justice movement.
She added, “Unless we can undermine the institution of homeownership and seek to provide stability in other ways, I don’t know — it’s a really difficult organizing situation we find ourselves in.”
Mamdani tapped the socialist housing activist to lead his Office to Protect Tenants, leading many to unearth her previous statements espousing statist schemes to erase private ownership of housing.
“I think the reality is, is that for centuries we’ve really treated property as an individualized good and not a collective good,” Weaver said in one video interview. “And transitioning to treating it as a collective good and towards a model of shared equity will require that we think about it differently. And it will mean that families, especially white families but some [people of color] families who are homeowners as well, are going to have a different relationship to property than the one that we currently have.”
In the latest resurfaced video, Weaver went on to say that massive taxation would be necessary to fund expanded social service programs.
“We need a national movement to pass universal rent control to limit landlords’ ability to endlessly profit on our homes, to give tenants the right to form a tenants’ union where they live, and to really block evictions,” she added. “But rent control is not enough. People need money. We need to tax billionaires and transform that into cash assistance for renters. And we need to chip away at home ownership, and that means — that means Medicare for All, that means, like, a deep investment in real social service programs.”

Even some on the left have recoiled at the extremism from Mamdani’s administration and the comments from Weaver associating homeownership with white supremacy.
“Homeownership is how immigrants, Black, Brown, and working-class New Yorkers built stability and generational wealth despite every obstacle,” said former NYC Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, on social media.
“You have to be completely out of your f***ing mind to call that ‘white supremacy,'” he continued. “That level of thinking only comes from extreme privilege and total detachment from reality.”
