
The corruption of Philippine flood control projects
On July 22, 2024, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr., in his third State of the Nation Address, highlighted the completion of 5,500 flood control projects and the construction of similar infrastructure nationwide, amid the expected heavy rains caused by La Niña at the time. More than a year later on July 28, 2025, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that 31 people had died due to the effects of Tropical Cyclones Crising, Dante, Emong, and the rain-inducing Southwest Monsoon or Habagat.
