The Cold Wars We Do Not Think We Are In Are Getting Hotter
Our Ambassador to the U.N. is getting interrupted like the Soviet Union still existed. President Trump has announced a resumption of nuclear weapons testing. The world is heating up. It has been more than thirty years since the United States conducted nuclear weapons tests other than on a computer. According to the President both Russia and China are conducting such tests despite agreements to cease doing so implemented when we ceased. These tests are primarily an exercise in saber rattling, as opposed to weapons development. The world is heating up in a big way.
We have been trying to conduct foreign policy by being passive-aggressive for a long time now. Passive-aggressive works when the people you are opposing don’t want to appear to be too aggressive. But passive-aggressive will lose to aggressive-aggressive every time – guys like Putin and Xi are definitely aggressive aggressive. Things got particularly bad recently. Obama was the king of passive-aggressive and Biden was absent – both basically inviting Russia and China to do whatever they wanted.. (House Oversight has now officially called Biden’s capabilities, especially during the last year of his term, into very serious question.) This move is likely long overdue.
Now, given Trump’s manner of negotiation this may have been positioning for his summit with Xi just concluded and will quietly slip away. But I don’t think so; I don’t think nuclear weapons were on the table for that meeting. All reporting on the president’s announcement is coming from other parts of the governments involved. I think we are going to see underground explosions in Nevada resume pretty soon.
I am sure “war monger” and “mass murderer,” and “environment destroyer” will now be added to the list of Trump’s uncountable sins. I am sure none on the left will see this move for what it actually is – a restoration of America as the nation leading the world. We cannot sit idly by while pip-squeaks like Cuba shout us down in the U.N. and our major nuclear adversaries act as if the nuclear testing ban does not exist.
I am sure many will say Trump is the one that heated all this up. What utter nonsense. The passiveness of Obama/Biden encouraged our adversaries to heat things up and we now have no choice but to respond.
The world is better given this announcement. Get over it.
